Constituency Looks Back on Black Sections

Islington North's October General Committee meeting enjoyed a talk by Talal Karim about the history of black and ethnic minority activism in the local Labour party.

The meeting was delighted by a series of images featuring well-known campaigners including Russell Profitt, Sharon Atkins, Bernie Grant, Nurendra Makanjee and Diane Abbott, as well as our own Talal.

Syd Jeffers, now a senior lecturer at the University of East London, presented the photographs which he took at meetings in Islington as a young political activist in 1987. An accomplished photographer, Syd has more recently recorded celebrations at the House of Commons marking the 25th Anniversary of the Black Socialist Society.
